Q. ?What is aspergillosis fungal infection?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Aspergillosis is a group of fungal infections caused by the genus Aspergillus, a type of mold found mainly on decaying plants and other materials. It can cause a wide range of symptoms ranging from mild to severe, depending on the affected organ/tissue. Symptoms may include fever and chest pains, coughing up blood or mucus, fatigue, breathing difficulties, headaches and weight loss. Depending on the severity of infection, treatment can range from simple medications such as anti-fungal creams or pills to more intensive tactics like surgery or special treatments that involve removing dead tissue in order to stop the spread of fungi. For people with weakened immune systems due to an underlying disease like HIV/AIDS or cancer, they are susceptible to developing potentially life-threatening forms of aspergillosis known as invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) which affects their lungs and pulmonary system; and chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis (CNPA), which affects both the lung tissues surrounding their bronchial tubes. If left untreated it could be fatal for those suffering from IPA or CNPA.
