Frequently Asked Questions

A Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET-CT) scan is a medical imaging technique that combines the capabilities of PET and CT scans. PET involves injecting a small amount of radioactive material into the body to visualize metabolic activity, while CT provides detailed anatomical images. The combined PET-CT scan allows for a comprehensive view of both metabolic and structural information, aiding in the diagnosis and monitoring of various medical conditions.

PET-CT scans are often used to diagnose, stage, and monitor conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders. They provide valuable information about the location, size, and metabolic activity of tumors, helping doctors determine the most appropriate treatment plans. Additionally, PET-CT scans are used to assess the effectiveness of ongoing treatments and to detect potential disease recurrence.

Before the scan, you may be asked to fast for a specific period to ensure accurate results. A small amount of radioactive material is then injected into your body, typically through an intravenous (IV) line. After a short waiting period to allow the radioactive material to distribute, you'll be positioned on a scanning table that moves through a PET and CT scanner. The process is painless, and you'll need to lie still during the scan. The entire procedure usually takes about 30 to 60 minutes.

Important Note:

  • The 18 F – FDG / Sodium Fluoride used for your PET Scan is procured from a Medical Cyclotron Centre that is at a distant place from our facility.
  • The production and synthesis of 18 F – FDG / Sodium Fluoride is a specialized procedure and involves complex physical, chemical and mechanical operations.
  • There may be unforeseen circumstances and unexpected failures at the Medical Cyclotron Center resulting in either no production or less production of 18 F – FDG / Sodium Fluoride
  • Also, some unprecedented delays in transportation of 18 F – FDG / Sodium Fluoride by road or by air, too may affect its timely supply.
  • The radioisotope 118F in the 18 F – FDG / Sodium Fluoride has a very short half-life of 110 minutes. During short-supply or no supply of this drug, it is likely that few or all scheduled appointments may have to be canceled or re-scheduled.
  • If such an incident occurs, we will inform you immediately and your appointment will be rescheduled to some other date at your convenience.
  • Nueclear Healthcare Limited would not be held liable for any harm or loss arising out of such cancellation
