A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a congenital heart defect that is present at birth. This means that the baby is born with the hole in the heart. In most cases, this hole closes on its own within the first year of life.
A ventricular septal defect occurs when there is an opening in the dividing wall between the two lower chambers of the heart, called the ventricles. This allows blood to flow from one chamber to another, which disrupts normal blood flow and can lead to problems with how well your heart works.
