It can be life-threatening if the hole is large and allows blood to flow directly from the left side of your heart (the high-pressure chamber) to your lungs. This condition, called pulmonary hypertension, can cause shortness of breath and extreme fatigue.
If the hole is small, it may not cause any problems. However, over time the hole may get bigger and eventually require surgery.
