Beans contain a type of carbohydrate called oligosaccharides, which are indigestible by the body. The bacteria in the intestines digest these carbohydrates and produce gas as a result, leading to flatulence. Additionally, some beans also contain raffinose, which is another type of indigestible carbohydrate that also contributes to excessive flatulence when they’re consumed. Beans are also high in fiber, contributing to an increase in intestinal gas production.
To reduce flatulence caused by beans, it helps to soak them overnight so that some of the excess starch can be removed before cooking them. Eating smaller amounts and spacing out your meals can also help you adjust more easily to eating foods like beans that your body may not be used to digesting yet. Finally, adding herbs and spices like cumin or ginger or lemon juice while cooking can help reduce bloating from eating baked beans as well!
