Q. What is globus disease?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Globus disease, also called Globus Sensation or Globus Hystericus, is a condition in which the patient experiences a feeling of having something stuck in their throat even though there may not be anything physically present. It has been described as “lump-in-the-throat” sensation and is usually accompanied by difficulty in swallowing. This sensation can cause stress, anxiety and uneasiness as it can feel like something is blocking the airway. The cause of this disorder is still unknown but it could be due to a combination of psychological factors such as stress, depression and anxiety which are known to increase muscle tension around the larynx and esophagus. Other possible causes include an irritation from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), postnasal drip syndrome or muscle spasms related to allergies or structural abnormalities within the larynx or pharyngeal muscles. Treatment for globus disease includes lifestyle changes such swallowing techniques/strategies like changing head position during oral intake; relaxation techniques; medications like anti depressants/antianxiety agents; botox injections into specific muscles that contribute to the sensation ; physical therapy exercises directed at reducing throat and neck tensions; posture correction exercised aimed at eliminating excessive head forward posture which can contribute to increased muscular tension around hyoid structures ; psychotherapy sessions aimed at improving emotional regulation and decreasing stress levels associated with meals.
