Q. What is fetal echocardiography?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Fetal echocardiography is an ultrasound technique that uses sound waves to produce images of the developing fetal heart. It is a safe, noninvasive way for doctors to assess and measure the structure, function and blood flow through the fetal heart. This type of imaging allows doctors to detect any abnormalities in the baby's development in utero.
The test begins with a normal transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound examination; this will help determine if there are any visible signs of congenital anomalies as well as provide information about gestational age and check on overall wellbeing. Once these initial exams have been completed the technician then focuses solely on obtaining detailed images from all sides of the heart using higher resolution equipment specifically designed for fetal cardiac evaluation.
These images can provide information about how efficient its pumping action is by measuring things like wall thickness, chamber size and valve function. They also allow doctors to detect specific abnormalities such as septal defects (including ventricular septal defect/VSD), pulmonary stenosis, atrial septal defect/ASD, Ebstein’s anomaly and other congenital problems with valves or Outflow tracts etc.. Fetal Echocardiograms are important so there can be proper diagnosis before birth which will ultimately lead to precise treatment once delivery day arrives enabling babies born with congenital heart defects receive optimal care right away if needed rather than having have prolonged hospitalization after birth due to delayed diagnosis prior it's arrival into this world..
