Q. What are the types of embolism?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
An embolism is a type of blockage in the arteries or veins caused by an obstruction that has migrated to another part of the body. Emboli can be categorized into three major types:
Thromboembolism - this is a blood clot that forms somewhere in a vein or artery, such as deep venous thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). Clots may travel through the bloodstream and get lodged in smaller vessels, blocking off blood flow beyond they blockage.
Air Embolism - this occurs when air enters the bloodstream and gets stuck at some point, causing obstruction of blood flow past that location. This usually happens during medical procedures involving insertion of catheters or intravenous lines.
Fat Embolism - these occur when fat particles enter the bloodstream due to fractures of bones with large amounts of fatty tissue around them; most often seen after traumatic injuries like car accidents and falls from great heights. These fat particles can get stuck on their way back to our lungs and heart, clogging up small arterioles along they journey thus resulting in reduced oxygen delivery to distal organs such as brain tissue leading potentially life threatening complications if not managed appropriately .
