Q. Is ovarian cancer dangerous?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Yes, ovarian cancer is definitely dangerous and can be life-threatening if not diagnosed early. Oftentimes it's referred to as a "silent killer" because there usually aren't any symptoms in the early stages. With that being said, most women who develop ovarian cancer don't know they have it until it has already reached an advanced stage.
When caught at its earliest possible stage, however, ovarian cancer can be treated more effectively with the highest chance of survival and remission - often times involving surgery and chemotherapy treatments.
In terms of statistics, according to the American Cancer Society (2020), about 22,530 women are estimated to receive a new diagnosis of ovarian cancer in US this year alone; while around 14,940 women will succumb to their disease at some point during 2020 or later on in life due to late detection or complications from treatment options available then or now. It's also important to note that the 5-year survival rate for all stages combined is only 46%, but when detected early (in localized stages) those numbers increase significantly up 95%.
To sum up: yes - Ovarian Cancer is quite dangerous if undiagnosed for too long; especially given that there are very few major signs and symptoms present in earlier stages so many women go untreated until much later. However with modern advances in medical science; detection methods such as regular pelvic examinations/ultrasounds should be considered by all regardless of age - catching it early really can make all the difference!
