According to data collected from over 10,500 patients across 35 countries in the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine’s (ESICM) registry, about 56% of patients who were put on a ventilator for COVID-19 actually survived their infection. However, the survival rate varied significantly according to age and pre-existing medical conditions; for example, individuals without any life-threatening illnesses prior to contracting COVID had a much higher survival rate - 76% - than those with existing health issues such as heart disease or diabetes - 27%. Additionally, the chance of survival was also impacted by how long an individual remained on the ventilator: 72% of those discharged after 1 week survived while only 20% remain when they left after 4 weeks. This highlights the importance of early detection and effective treatment in order to improve outcomes associated with this virus.
