In an ICU setting, there are a number of different ways to feed patients. The most common way is through a feeding tube that goes into the stomach through the nose or mouth. This is called enteral feeding.
Another way to feed patients is through a vein, which is called parenteral feeding. With this method, nutrients are directly delivered into the bloodstream. This type of feeding is usually used when a patient is not able to eat orally or when they have trouble swallowing.
