The chances of survival depend on a number of factors, including the underlying cause of the respiratory failure, the patient's age and health status, and whether or not they have any other serious medical problems.
Generally speaking, patients who are critically ill and require mechanical ventilation have a poor prognosis and only a small percentage will survive. However, there are some cases where patients can be successfully weaned from the ventilator and go on to make a full recovery.
