Q. What is sinusitis or sinus infection?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Sinusitis or sinus infection is an inflammation of the mucous membranes in your sinuses, usually caused by a virus, bacteria, or fungus. It can cause a wide range of symptoms such as headaches and facial pressure, congestion, difficulty breathing through the nose and bad breath. In severe cases it can even lead to vision problems.
In most cases of sinusitis, your body will heal itself without any medical intervention. However if you experience persistent symptoms such as fever over 38°C (100°F), green/yellow nasal drainage that lasts more than 10 days or continues to come back after treatment with antibiotics then you should see a doctor for further diagnosis and treatment options including medications such as antibiotics and steroid sprays which reduce inflammation. If there is no response to medical treatments then surgery may be necessary in order to open up blocked passages and remove infected tissue from inside the sinuses.
Understanding how to manage the condition is key: keep your nasal passages clean using saline sprays; use decongesting sprays judiciously; drink plenty of fluids; keep humidity levels high with a humidifier; take steamy showers and use warm compresses on your face for relief from facial pain; avoid irritants like smoke and perfume vapor; practice good hygiene habits such as frequent hand washing to prevent infection spread from colds & flues etc.
The ultimate aim is to get healthy again by reducing inflammation within the airways - but this requires patience on behalf of yourself!
