Shortness of breath when lying down and in cold air that worsens with sitting, standing, and walking up stairs but without other accompanying symptoms such as coughing could be indicative of asthma. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition of the airways caused by a combination of genetic, environmental and infectious factors which can lead to episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and cough.
However it is more likely pericardial effusion if the shortness of breath worsens significantly while on exertion (such as walking up stairs). Pericardial effusion refers to an abnormal amount of fluid accumulation between two layers in the heart’s sac-like structure known as the pericardium. This fluid can cause compression on the heart leading to shortness of breath along with chest pain or feeling full/fatigue after meals.
Treatment for either condition will depend on your underlying diagnosis but generally includes medications like bronchodilators for asthma or anti-inflammatory drugs for pericardial effusions alongside lifestyle modifications such as avoiding triggers (air pollutants etc) or increasing physical activity gradually etc. Additionally general measures such as maintaining good hydration levels and ensuring healthy body weight can help improve breathing symptoms overall. It is always best advised to speak with doctor about specific treatment recommendations that are tailored to your individual health needs .
