Venous leg ulcers are caused by a dysfunction of the venous system in the legs. This results in increased pressure within the veins, which eventually causes blood to pool in the legs. This pooled blood can damage the skin and lead to ulcers.
There are a number of risk factors for venous leg ulcers, including pregnancy, obesity, age, and history of vein disease. Treatment usually involves compression stockings and/or surgery to improve blood flow in the veins.
