Q. What are the side effects of an echocardiogram?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
An echocardiogram is a safe, non-invasive medical procedure used to assess the structure and function of the heart. Generally speaking, there are few side effects associated with an echocardiogram and it is considered a relatively low risk procedure.
The risks associated with an echocardiogram include discomfort from lying still during the ultrasound scanning process (known as the sonographer's acclimation effect), discomfort from pressure on your chest while scanning (if a transducer needs to be applied directly to your chest) or minor bruising if you've had contrast dye injected into your bloodstream, in addition to a very small chance of developing allergic reaction due to this injection.
Overall, however, these risks are minimal and should not cause too much concern - most people who have had an echo have reported feeling no difference after their examination other than feeling relieved that they have been checked out by their doctor.
