Q. Is psoriasis skin lesions?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Yes, psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red patches with silvery scaling and dryness. These lesions are usually very itchy, especially when they flare up.
Psoriasis is caused by an overactive immune system, which leads to inflammation in the skin and faster production of new skin cells than normal. This can cause red, scaly patches that may also crack or become infected. Psoriasis commonly appears on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back but can affect any area of the body including nails and genitals.
The exact cause of psoriasis is still unknown but it’s believed to be linked to a genetic predisposition; if someone has a family history of psoriasis then they are more likely to develop the condition themselves. It’s also thought certain environmental factors such as stress or infection could trigger an outbreak for those already predisposed to developing psoriasis.
There isn’t currently any cure for this condition but there are treatments available to manage symptoms and improve quality of life such as topical ointments/creams which reduce inflammation or light therapy using UVB radiation from special lamps- both methods have proven helpful in treating mild cases of psoriasis.. For more severe cases medications such as biologics might be recommended along with lifestyle modifications like avoiding triggers (stressful situations) eating healthily etc., all helping reduce flares risk significantly by keeping symptoms at bay
