Gastric band surgery is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure, and it generally carries relatively low levels of pain and discomfort. During the procedure, patients are given general anesthesia to make them sleep while the medical team inserts a gastric band through several small incisions. The band is adjusted by adding or removing saline solution without making additional incisions. Afterwards, most patients experience some mild abdominal soreness, but it can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
It's also important to note that individuals may experience different levels of pain depending on their individual body chemistry and how well they respond to medication. During recovery, the patient should follow their doctor's instructions closely in order to minimize any potential discomfort and achieve optimal results after surgery.
