Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Fournier's Gangrene is a rare and serious type of necrotizing fasciitis, which is a flesh-eating infection that affects the genital area. It usually occurs in men aged between 50 to 70, but it can also occur in women and children.
The most common cause of Fournier's gangrene is an infection with certain types of bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacteroides fragilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria. These infections are often caused by improper hygiene along with any skin breaches or open wounds close to the genital area that may result due to excessive sweating or sexual intercourse.
Other causes include diabetes mellitus (DM) which weakens immune system leading to increased possibilities of bacterial or fungal invasion into the necessary organs or areas resulting in Fournier’s gangrene; chemotherapy treatment which can lead to changes in the chemical composition of bodily secretions making it less resistant against bacteria growth; use drugs like steroids; and surgical procedures performed on local areas where risk of infection increases substantially due to contact with unsterilized tools or alimentary substances etc.,
Early diagnosis is critical for successful treatment and prevention from this rare disease so if people experience symptoms like fever, intense pain around genital area accompanied by swelling oozing pus from genitals then they should seek medical help immediately especially those having DM and have undergone surgeries recently near their private parts as these might be indicative of Fournier’s gangrene starting up its damage internally. Treatment options include antibiotics, debridement (removal)of all dead tissues either done manually through surgery under general anaesthesia followed by dressing change once daily until healed completely; hyperbaric oxygen therapy to fill infected region with high concentration oxygen molecules thereby killing off harmful germs as well as helping wound heal faster; some cases might require amputation if situation goes out control.; amputation could even go above waist level depending on how quickly patient was able treat condition after noticing first symptoms etc.,
