The average length of stay in an ICU ward varies greatly depending on the severity and complexity of each patient’s illness. Generally speaking, however, the average length of stay across all patients typically ranges from three to seven days. For critically ill patients with severe organ failure or other life-threatening conditions, this number can rise dramatically; some ICUs have average lengths of stay up to several weeks or longer. While there are initiatives within healthcare institutions to reduce these times by improving quality and efficiency, many factors can contribute to a patient’s length of stay in an ICU ward such as their age and health condition when admitted into care.
