Yes, mastitis can cause a decrease in milk supply. When the breast tissue is inflamed due to an infection or blockage, it can make it difficult for the cells surrounding the mammary gland to produce enough milk for your baby's demands. The inflammation from mastitis also interferes with the communication between hormones and cells that normally support healthy lactation, resulting in decreased production of milk.

Mastitis can be caused by several different factors including infections (bacterial or viral), blocked ducts, improper latch during breastfeeding, engorged breasts, cracked nipples and other injuries on your nipple area. To reduce your chances of developing mastitis and its accompanying reduction in milk supply, keep your breasts clean and dry; wear nursing bras that fit properly; practice good latch techniques; take frequent breaks during feeding sessions and switch sides when feeding; empty both breasts completely after feedings; avoid tight-fitting clothing around your chest area that could block off important circulation impacting lactation hormones. In addition to following these tips as preventative measures against developing mastitis there are also supportive treatments should you need them such as hot compresses before feeds to help unblock any plugged up ducts or cold compresses afterwards to soothe any inflammation or swelling which might have developed due to infection/overuse etc..

If you think you’re experiencing symptoms of Mastitus like redness on one side of your breast accompanied by warmth/swelling/tenderness consult a healthcare practitioner for diagnosis/treatment ASAP as this kind of condition can worsen over time if not treated properly leading ultimately reduced long-term production of breastmilk if left unchecked.
