Yes, you can do Surya Namaskara if you have cervical spondylosis, although it is important to note that caution should be taken. While yoga asanas such as Surya Namaskara are known to improve symptoms of compression-based spinal issues such as cervical spondylosis, it is necessary to practice the poses correctly and safely in order to achieve desired results.
In particular, modifications should be made when doing Surya Namaskara or any other yoga pose when one has cervical spondylosis. For example: Avoid placing pressure on the neck by keeping your head in line with your spine at all times; never “hang” off the shoulders during a forward fold; backbend less deeply (or not at all) so that your chest does not collapse toward your chin; and use props (such as blocks/blankets) for support as needed.
Additionally, there are some poses which may be contraindicated for individuals with cervical spondylosis who choose to do Surya Namaskara. These include Urdhva Mukha Paschimottanasana (Upward Facing Seated Forward Bend), Janu Sirsasana (Head-to-Knee Pose), Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand), Halasana (Plough Pose), Matsyasana (Fish Pose). It is best to avoid these but nonetheless keep up with general stretching exercises that focus more on upper body and shoulder movements than deep forward bends or twists in order to reduce irritation of nerves in the neck area.
At the end of each session remember also: give yourself time for Savasana - lie down flat on your back with palms facing upwards and legs spread apart slightly just above hip width distance - relax completely without straining yourself too much! Make sure this posture lasts between 5-15 minutes depending upon what works best for you after consulting a healthcare professional specialized in yoga therapy.
