Ophthalmologist · Ophthalmology

Yes, BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) graduates are eligible to do specialization in the field of Ophthalmology. According to the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 Section 12(2)(bb), “Ayurvedacharya or equivalent degree holders with post graduate qualification in specified branches of Ayurveda viz., Kayachikitsa, Shalyatantra, Shalakyatantra and Prasoothitantra (incl. ophthalmology) shall be eligible for appointment as a specialist”.

To become an eye specialist after completing BAMS course is a long process which requires dedication and hard work. One has to first complete their internship program that comes at the end of their BAMS course as it provides experience in various departments like – Kayachikitsa, Shalyatantra, Shalakyatantra, Panchakarma etc. After completion of internships programs one may have to apply for a postgraduate diploma programme or Master Degree Programme in Ophthalmology from any recognised university & institution offering this type of courses following which they can opt for Super Specialization Programmes like DNB (Diplomate National Board). They should also adhere to all the criteria set by state medical councils; followed by Eligibility exams conducted by All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). After clearing these exams they will gain certification as specialised eye doctor or ophthalmologist & can start practising independently with requisite license issued by respective state councils.

Due care must be taken while going through this process as Ophthalmologists are primarily responsible for performing surgeries related to eyes that demands great precision & skill sets while diagnosing diseases associated with eyes too requires strong understanding & knowledge about this field making it difficult yet highly rewarding profession due its challenges along with high social importance attached towards their services respectively.
