Intensivist · Critical Care/ICU
My experience in the intensive care unit after being sedated and put on a ventilator was both physically and psychologically taxing, yet profoundly rewarding. Being under heavy sedation meant that I had limited awareness of my physical surroundings or what medical staff were doing to me. I felt like a helpless passenger in the process, but with an understanding that these measures were necessary for my overall health and well-being.
I remember feeling especially vulnerable while I was connected to multiple monitors, which tracked everything from vital signs to oxygen levels in my lungs. It created a surreal sensation of being acutely conscious of how fragile life can be when our bodies are struggling to heal themselves naturally. Even though there were moments where panic would set it due to all the wires connected to me, there was also one of great peace as my body slowly began responding positively with every treatment cycle administered by the medical team around me.
One thing that stood out during my time on the ICU was seeing firsthand how healthcare practitioners dedicate their lives towards even minute improvements in someone's health state - no matter how small or inconsequential it might seem at first glance. It is this level of commitment and genuine empathy demonstrated by them day-in and day-out that made me truly appreciate their efforts for providing high quality care for people like myself who desperately needed it during critical times of need.. In hindsight, this stay at ICU provided me with invaluable insight into human resilience and helped develop new perspective on life itself!
