Treatment for mastitis usually involves antibiotics and pain relief.

If the infection is caught early, antibiotics may be all that is needed. If the infection is more advanced, or if there are abscesses, surgery may be necessary. Pain relief can include over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, or prescription pain medications. Hot packs and cold packs may also help relieve pain.
