Q. What causes breast pain when exercising?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Breast pain while exercising can be caused by a number of things, such as inadequate support, poor fitting sports bra, breast density, and hormonal changes.
If you are not wearing a supportive bra while exercising, your breasts will move up and down and from side to side. This movement can cause the Cooper's ligaments that support the breasts to stretch and may lead to pain. A poorly fitted sports bra will not provide enough support for your breasts, which can also lead to pain.
Breast density is another factor that can contribute to breast pain while exercising. Breasts are made up of fatty tissue and glandular tissue. Fatty tissue is less dense than glandular tissue, so it appears dark on a mammogram.
