Q. What is the primary cause of coronary heart disease?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Coronary heart disease (CHD), sometimes referred to as coronary artery disease, is the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart. The primary cause of CHD is an accumulation of plaque - a combination of cholesterol, fat, calcium and other substances found in the bloodstream. When this plaque accumulates on artery walls, it can interfere with blood flow and put strain on your heart muscle.
Risk factors for developing CHD include being overweight or obese, physical inactivity and unhealthy eating habits such as consuming too much saturated fat and sugar. Smoking can also increase risk significantly by damaging your arteries and increasing plaque buildup. Uncontrolled diabetes also increases risk because it can damage nerves that control heart rate in addition to promoting plaque build up due to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.
Other potential causes may be related to genetics including familial hypercholesterolemia which is an inherited condition where very high cholesterol occurs primarily due to genetic predisposition; low levels of good cholesterol (HDL); any diseases affecting proper functioning or regulation of cardiovascular system; chronic inflammation caused by infections such as some viral infections or environmental pollutants are another culprits potentially linked with increased risk for CHD; long-term exposure to air pollution like smoke from vehicles etc., also increases chances for CHD development over time; alcohol abuse has been linked with coronary event risk especially when consumed beyond recommended limits.
Therefore it's important for us all keep our health under check by maintaining a healthy diet comprised mostly from fruits & vegetables rich in vitamins & minerals & limiting intake from processed food items like fast food frequently associated with elevated cholesterol levels , living active lifestyles engaging into regular exercise& physical activities helping lower bad/LDL cholesterol while boosting HDL production throughout body , abstaining from smoking & implementing stress management techniques so we can maintain balanced lifestyle avoiding unnecessary risks contributing towards negative general wellbeing leading ultimately towards coronary illnesses development .
