Q. What is the disease of mastitis?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Mastitis is an infection and inflammation of the breast tissue caused by bacteria, often from a cracked or sore nipple. It is more common in lactating women and can cause severe swelling, tenderness, pain and redness in one area of the breast. In some cases, mastitis may lead to fever as well as flu-like symptoms such as body aches and chills. Treatment usually involves antibiotics to clear up the infection along with warm compresses on the affected area for pain relief. If left untreated it can spread throughout the milk producing ducts which can result in an abscess or formation of blockages that can prevent milk from flowing correctly. Prevention measures include proper hygiene during breastfeeding, avoiding tight fitting bras or clothing around your breasts while nursing, and keeping nipples dry after each feeding session. This condition requires prompt medical attention so if you notice any unusual signs like swelling or redness then it’s best to contact your healthcare provider right away.
