Q. What is "Kadha", the Indian medicinal drink?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Kadha is a traditional herbal decoction made by boiling various medicinal herbs in water. It is an Ayurvedic preparation that has been in use since ancient times and is said to have therapeutic effects on the body as well as mind. The components of kadha vary according to the ingredients available, however common ingredients include Indian Gooseberry (Amla), Basil (Tulsi), Turmeric, Dry Ginger, Cinnamon, Black Pepper, Long Pepper, Fennel seeds and Cardamom.
Kadha provides nourishment to the body and helps in fighting off seasonal infections due to its immune-boosting components such as tulsi and multiple spices. It also helps fight stress levels by calming down the nervous system with herbs like ashwagandha, brahmi and jatamansi; all of which are known for their adaptogenic qualities. Furthermore it aids digestion due to its digestive component - ginger - which stimulates secretion of digestive juices such as bile juice whilst also strengthening metabolism thereby improving nutrient absorption from food.
Despite being mainly consumed for medicinal purposes over time Kadha has become a popular drink with many people drinking it daily for overall health benefits. Nowadays you can find prepackaged ready-to-go versions of this amazing immunity booster at most grocery stores!
