Q. What is coronary heart disease?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Coronary heart disease is a major health concern worldwide, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. It is a type of cardiovascular disease that occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart become blocked or narrowed due to buildup of fatty deposits called plaque. When this happens, it reduces the amount of oxygen-rich blood reaching the heart muscle, leading to chest pain (angina) or even complete blockage with resulting heart attack.
Risk factors for coronary heart disease include smoking, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol levels and family history – meaning if someone in your family has had coronary artery disease you may also be at higher risk for developing it yourself. Other lifestyle factors such as poor diet choices, lack of physical activity and stress can also increase risk. Treatments for CHD include lifestyle modification such as eating healthier foods and regular exercising, medications like statins to lower cholesterol levels or ACE inhibitors/beta blockers to control hypertension and finally interventional procedures such as angioplasty/stenting which involve opening up blocked arteries and keeping them open through use of balloons/stents respectively.
It is important to note that early detection through routine check ups with your doctor can reduce morbidity/mortality associated with coronary artery disease allowing us to lead happier lives. Studies have shown that even modest changes in lifestyle can help reduce your chance of getting CHD so don't wait - start taking care of yourself today!
