The primary symptom of in-situ breast cancer (also known as Stage 0 breast cancer) is usually a small, non-painful lump located in the breast. Other signs can include changes to the shape and texture of the nipple or areola, such as dimpling, puckering, redness and scaliness. In some cases, bloody discharge from the nipple may also be present.

In-situ breast cancers typically develop very slowly and produce no palpable lumps or other irregularities when pressed upon with a finger. As such it is often undetectable during routine self exam and mammographic imaging studies are generally needed for diagnosis. While these cancers have not yet spread beyond their original site they can still potentially become life threatening if not treated appropriately so regular checkups should be performed regardless to ensure early detection of any suspicious areas.
