Q. Is there anyway we can totally avoid ear pain while in aircraft?

Yes, there are several ways to help prevent or reduce the pain of your ears while in an aircraft.
First and foremost, swallowing or yawning frequently can equalize the pressure in your ears and provide relief. You can also chew gum or suck on candy to encourage swallowing motions. Additionally, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated as this helps maintain ear fluid levels, and avoiding eating a heavy meal before flying can minimize stomach bloating which will further aide in preventing pressure build-up within the ear canal.
You may also want to consider using decongestants before flying (only after talking with your doctor is highly recommended). Decongestants help reduce mucous buildup that contributes to feeling blockage within the ear. Lastly, if you feel any symptoms starting up during take-off/landing then use a Valsalva maneuver: close your mouth and pinch your nostrils shut while trying to gently blow out air against a closed airway - this works by releasing built-up pressure from behind the eardrum so that it doesn’t cause pain.
By following these steps you should be well on your way towards having less discomfort when flying!
