Q. Is there a medicine that will make you vomit?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Yes, there is. Vomiting is a very common mechanism which the body uses to expel unsettled stomach contents as well as other toxins and poisons from the system. The most commonly used drug for inducing vomiting is called syrup of ipecac, also known by its generic name emetine hydrochloride or emetrol.
Syrup of ipecac has been in use since the 19th century when it was first isolated from extracts of a Brazilian shrub belonging to the genus Ipecacuanha (Carapichea ipecacuanha). It works by triggering certain nerve centers in your brain which control your gastrointestinal muscles, resulting in increased muscular contractions throughout your digestive tract leading to vomiting.
It should be noted that syrup of ipecac isn't suitable for every case and should only be consumed under medical advice or recommendation as it can sometimes cause excessive vomiting which might lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance if not monitored carefully. In cases where induction with syrup of ipecac fails, other drugs such as apomorphine can be prescribed by medical experts so consult a doctor before trying any out at home on your own.
