Q. Is Cleft Lip and Palate preventable?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
The answer to this question is yes and no. On one hand, there are certain preventative measures that can be taken to minimise the chances of a child being born with cleft lip or palate. These include, but are not limited to avoiding alcohol or tobacco use during pregnancy, taking folic acid supplements before conception and during pregnancy, as well as making sure mothers have adequate nutrition levels prior to getting pregnant.
On the other hand, in some cases there may be genetic factors which make it impossible for parents to prevent their children from being born with cleft lip or palate. Therefore it is important for parents who already have children with this condition to visit doctors and undertake further tests in order to identify any possible genetic issues that may increase their risk of having another child with cleft lip or palate.
Despite this though, science has shown us that taking proper precautions throughout pregnancy such as obtaining adequate nutrition and avoiding substances like tobacco and alcohol can significantly reduce the chances of a baby having either form of birth defect. Furthermore these practices also support mother’s overall health so they should always been followed regardless if a parent wants to lower the risk of their baby having these conditions or not.
