Depending on the severity of your spinal fracture, it is possible to lose varying amounts of height. Most people will typically experience a decrease in their height between 1-2 inches after a vertebral fracture. More severe fractures can result in greater height loss, up to 4 inches or more with multiple vertebral compression fractures. Additionally, people often experience changes in body symmetry due to the effects that fracturing has on surrounding muscles and tissue.
In terms of prevention and recovery, there are certain treatments available such as bracing and physical therapy that may help reduce the pain associated with a spinal fracture and slow down further height loss. However, for those experiencing significant height loss due to their fractured spine it is important to seek medical attention immediately as this can be an indication of serious underlying issues which need very specific diagnosis and treatment; failure to do so could potentially lead to further complications which cannot be reversed through rehabilitation.
