Q. How long does it take for biopsy results?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
The time it takes for biopsy results to be returned can vary greatly depending on the type of biopsy conducted, the complexity of the tissue being tested, and/or any additional tests that may need to be performed in order to obtain an accurate result.
Typically, a simple skin biopsy -- such as removing a small section of skin with a special instrument -- will produce results within a few days. However, if more complex tests (such as lab analysis or MRI scans) are required before developing a diagnosis this process can take weeks and even months in some cases. If your doctor is unable to make an immediate diagnosis at the time of your visit they will likely ask you to return for follow up testing after several weeks or months have passed.
For example: if you have undergone fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy procedures there may be between 7-14 days wait for sampling and processing before final results are available from the lab. Core needle biopsies generally provide quicker turnaround times than FNA - typically within 5-7 days.
Generally speaking, when it comes to receiving positive test results most patients do not have long waits; however for negative findings it can take significantly longer due to their complexity and scope – often 1 – 2 weeks from initial consult until full pathology report is obtained by physician’s office and communicated with patient. Furthermore, if tissue samples taken during surgery must undergo further investigation this could add additional wait times before definitive diagnoses are reached which could extend out past 1 month initially estimated recovery timeline in some instances.. Please note all timeline estimates should be discussed directly with qualified healthcare providers who understand every individual patient’s unique medical history prior finalizing treatment plans/expectations!
