The amount of time it takes to recover from spinal surgery depends on a variety of factors such as the type of procedure performed, the severity and complexity of the underlying condition, age, overall health status and any complications. Generally speaking, most doctors agree that it usually takes between a few weeks to several months for people to fully recover after spinal surgery.
Immediately after surgery patients may experience pain or discomfort in the areas around their incision sites while they heal. As well as feeling limited mobility or some numbness due to nerve damage or movement restrictions put in place during surgery. During this initial healing process it is important for patients to perform light stretching and gentle movements when possible as advised by their doctor. This helps increase blood flow which promotes faster recovery times.
Typically over time following a period of rest prescribed by your doctor you will gradually start to be able to do more physical activities such as walking with assistance, biking/stationary biking/swimming if medically cleared for these activities, light exercise like yoga/low impact strength training exercises at home etc (again based on clearance from your MD).
Your surgeon may suggest therapy throughout this timeline (physiotherapy) which can help improve mobility and strength through customised strengthening strategies appropriate according to your own injury needs or medical requirements. Regular check ups with your MD are also recommended so that any scar tissue build up that could have formed following surgery can be addressed accordingly with manual techniques aimed at increasing range of motion if needed. After 4-6 months post-surgery many patients tend return back close 95% percent back close too normal physical state prior being diagnosed with current condition sometimes even doing activities they were unable fully perform before spinal fusion procedures took place !
