Cryotherapy, also known as cryosurgery, is a safe and effective form of treatment for keloids. It involves the application of extreme cold temperatures to the affected area—typically less than -200 degrees Fahrenheit. The procedure works by freezing the tissue in the keloid which then causes it to become necrotic and eventually slough off. Over time, this helps reduce the size and appearance of existing keloids, prevent further growth, and protect against recurrence.
The cold temperatures cause a response from certain proteins that naturally occur in skin cells called fibroblasts. This protein response will trigger an inflammatory reaction which helps break down collagen fibers that are responsible for creating excess scar tissue (i.e., keloids). As these fibers disintegrate over time they can create more normal looking scars or assist with flattening out any raised scars caused by a previous injury or surgery.
In addition to being used as a standalone treatment option for treating existing keloid formations, cryotherapy is often used in combination with other treatments such as corticosteroid injections or silicone gel sheeting to help maximize results while minimizing potential side effects associated with each method alone.
It's important to note that this type of therapy may not work on all types of skin lesions including very large oversized keloids so it's recommended you seek medical advice from your doctor before beginning any kind of treatment plan on yourself if considering cryotherapy as an option for removing your specific situation/keloid type.
