Allergies develop when the immune system, which is designed to protect the body from harmful substances like bacteria and viruses, reacts to a substance (allergen) as though it were harmful. The process of developing allergies involves a series of steps:

1. Sensitization: The first exposure to an allergen sensitizes the immune system. During this initial exposure, the immune system recognizes the allergen as foreign but doesn't necessarily react strongly.

2. Production of IgE antibodies: Upon subsequent exposures to the same allergen, the immune system produces specific antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE). These antibodies are designed to recognize and bind to the allergen.

3. Release of chemicals: When IgE antibodies encounter the allergen again, they trigger the release of chemicals, such as histamine, from certain cells (mast cells and basophils) in the body. This release of chemicals is what causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

4. Symptoms: The chemicals released, particularly histamine, can cause a range of symptoms, depending on the type of allergen and the individual's sensitivity. Common symptoms include sneezing, itching, swelling, hives, nasal congestion, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing.

It's important to note that not everyone who is exposed to an allergen will develop an allergy. Some individuals may be more genetically predisposed to allergies, and environmental factors can also play a role. Additionally, the development of allergies can occur at any age, with some individuals developing allergies in childhood and others in adulthood.
