Q. How common are cleft lips and palates?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Cleft lips and palates are one of the most common birth defects. It is estimated that about 1 out of every 700 children in the United States and Europe are born with a cleft lip or palate, and in some parts of Asia, the frequency can be as high as 1 in every 200 births. Clefts occur more frequently in males than females. A cleft lip is a physical split or separation of the two sides of the upper lip and appears as a narrow opening or gap in the skin of the upper lip. Whereas, a cleft palate is an opening/gap in either side (i.e left/right side) or both sides (bilateral)of roof inside mouth between nose to throat which allows food passage from mouth to throat directly without passing through normal path i.e towards stomach via esophagus which helps us swallow food easily. Patients having cleft generally face speech issue due to improper formation at oral cavity part but with proper care these minor issues can corrected through surgery after consulting doctors .
