Q. Does creatine cause testicular cancer?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
No, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that creatine use causes testicular cancer. While it was once suggested by some studies in animals that the supplement might increase the risk of cancer in humans, more recent research has not found any association between creatine and various types of cancers including testicular cancer.
In fact, some experts have argued that taking creatine may even slightly lower someone's risk for developing certain types of cancers due to the antioxidant properties in some forms of the supplement. A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition looking at a variety of dietary antioxidants concluded that there was an inverse relationship between total antioxidant intake and colorectal cancer mortality rates. Although this study did not specifically look at testicular cancer, it does indicate individuals who consume higher levels of antioxidants may have a reduced risk for certain types of cancers.
It’s also important to note that while there are many potential benefits associated with creatine supplementation such as enhanced physical performance and improved brain function, its effect on our health largely depends on how much you take and over what period time – just like with any other supplement or medication out there. Therefore, if you do choose to take creatine supplements (which is something we would advise against), please make sure you follow instructions carefully regarding dosages and timing!
