Yes, it’s possible for someone to survive stage 4 colon cancer. While colon cancer is the third leading cause of death from cancer in the United States, the survival rate has improved significantly over the last decade.
In 2017, a study reported that among people with localized (meaning only one tumor) or regional (one tumor and some nearby lymph nodes are involved) colorectal cancers, 62% stayed alive after 5 years. The 5-year survival rate was greater if detected at an early stage – 91%. On the other hand, 55% of those with distant or metastatic tumors survived at least five years.
The treatment options available depend on several factors including cancer location and size; extent of spread; patient’s overall health and preference for treatment; type of cancer cell; whether surgery is an option or not; how well chemotherapy works etc. Common treatments include chemotherapy to shrink tumors before surgery and/or radiation therapy as well as targeted drugs like bevacizumab (Avastin), cetuximab (Erbitux) or panitumumab (Vectibix). There are also clinical trials open for advanced stages which can offer newer treatments than standard ones.
