Orthopedic Surgeon · Back Pain and Spinal Surgery
Spine surgery can take anywhere from a few hours to multiple days, depending on the complexity of the procedure and the individual patient’s health status. The duration of spine surgery will typically include pre-operative procedures such as imaging and preparation, as well as post-operative measures for pain management and recovery.
For less complex spinal surgeries, like a laminectomy or discectomy, it typically takes anywhere from one to two hours for completion. More comprehensive surgeries that require more extensive work around the spine could take up to six to eight hours or longer. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may even need more than one surgery over multiple days so that your surgeon can properly assess your progress following each procedure and make sure all areas are fully healed before continuing with additional operations.
In addition to surgical time there is also a significant amount of time dedicated to pre-op preparation including imaging studies (CT scan and/or MRI), blood tests, physician visits and assessments by anesthesiologists then followed by post-op recovery activities such as physical therapy sessions which can last several weeks or months if needed. Therefore taking into account both pre & post op activities in totality spine surgery can be quite lengthy process indeed!
