As a nurse, I would suggest that any pregnant woman with pyrosis (heartburn) should take measures to alleviate their symptoms. The first step is to make lifestyle changes such as eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day and avoiding greasy, fatty food. Additionally, raising the head of her bed slightly while sleeping can help reduce nighttime heartburn.
I would also recommend that she avoid lying down right after consuming food or drink and elevating her upper body by propping herself up on pillows when lying down; this may help decrease gastroesophageal reflux which is a common cause of heartburn during pregnancy.
It may be helpful for her to identify certain foods or drinks that may trigger her heartburn and limit consumption of these items during pregnancy as well as wear loose fitting clothes so not to put pressure on the abdomen region which can worsen symptoms.
If all else fails there are many over-the-counter medications available to help alleviate milder forms of heartburn during pregnancy; however it is important for her to speak with her doctor before taking medications for safety reasons because some medications are contraindicated in pregnant women.
