Caffeine is a stimulant which can cause an increase in heart rate, leading to the feeling of heart palpitations. A cup of coffee contains around 95-200 milligrams (mg) of caffeine, so depending on your sensitivity level you may experience these symptoms after consuming only a small amount.
Certain factors can influence how sensitive you are to the effects of caffeine including age, weight, genetics and lifestyle habits. People with anxiety or an underlying cardiac condition may be more susceptible to experiencing heart palpitations after consuming coffee or other caffeinated beverages like tea and soda.
If you’re regularly experiencing heart palpitations after drinking coffee it’s important to talk to your doctor as they may be able to work out which type and amount is best for you based on your individual health profile. The American Heart Association recommends limiting yourself from 3-5 cups per day depending on how much caffeine is in each cup and suggests switching up your daily dose for decaf options if needed.
