Pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) are specialized medical units designed to provide highly specialized and complex care for critically ill or injured children. Unfortunately, these units are scarce because of several factors.

First, PICUs require a highly trained staff, including physicians with advanced training in pediatrics, nurses and other allied healthcare staff with experience treating pediatric patients, as well as respiratory therapists and pharmacists who specialize in the treatment of critically ill or injured children. As a result, there is often limited availability of highly skilled professionals dedicated to providing specialized pediatric critical care services.

Second, PICUs require resources that can be difficult for hospitals to obtain or afford due to their cost and complexity. In addition to staffing needs outlined above, sophisticated technology and equipment must be purchased and maintained in order for PICUs to function effectively. Furthermore, even when resources are available they may still need to be shared among hospitals given the finite supply available across the country.

Thirdly, given these resource constraints establishing a new PICU is no small task either; it would require an involved process involving local health department approval followed by construction or renovation costs prior to meeting national standards set by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Additionally many regions don't meet federal guidelines recommending one bed per 605 individuals under age 18 making it difficult for some areas without population density or financial resources suitable for opening additional beds or expanding existing ones.

Ultimately this lack of availability means that families have few options when seeking pediatric intensive care services which only further compounds the challenging nature of these cases since timely access can be essential when dealing with life-threatening conditions affecting young patients alike; oftentimes leading them on longer journeys than necessary just so that they receive appropriate level care from more distant facilities equipped with specialists able to handle such matters properly - which adds additional financial burden on top already costly treatments required during such instances..
