Q. What were the first signs of renal cancer?
Doctor Answer is medically reviewed by SecondMedic medical review team.
Renal cancer, also called kidney cancer, occurs when abnormal cells grow and divide uncontrollably in the tissues of one or both of the kidneys. Symptoms do not usually appear until renal cancer has progressed to an advanced stage; however, some early signs may be present.
The most common early symptom is pain in the area of the affected kidney. This pain may be sharp, dull, or even throbbing. It may worsen with increased activity or extreme temperatures and can eventually cause issues such as nausea and vomiting. Changes in urination are another common symptom of renal cancer; this can include blood in the urine (hematuria) that makes it a pinkish color or frequent urges accompanied by burning sensations when urinating (dysuria). Other symptoms include weight loss without reason, swollen feet and ankles from fluid retention (edema), fatigue associated with anemia due to excessive internal bleeding from tumors growing within the kidneys themselves and fever that does not dissipate after taking medication for a cold or flu.
Since these symptoms are often vague and could indicate other health issues as well as renal cancer, it’s important to contact your doctor right away if you experience any of them so tests can be performed to diagnose the condition properly before treatment begins.
