Intubation is the placement of a tube into the trachea (windpipe) to maintain an open airway and assist with ventilation. Ventilation is the process of moving air in and out of the lungs. So intubation would be one means of providing ventilation. Other means of providing ventilation include mechanical ventilation (using machines to push air into and out of the lungs), bag-valve-mask resuscitation (providing positive pressure ventilation by hand), and spontaneous breathing (the patient breathes for themselves).
