What is so challenging about the job of an anaesthetist?

The job of an anaesthetist is highly challenging and demanding, as it involves the use of powerful drugs to induce a state of unconsciousness in patients undergoing surgical operations. Achieving this delicate balance of administering just enough anaesthetic to keep the patient sedated through surgery without causing harm requires expertise and precision. Anaesthetists must have vast knowledge on pharmacology, human anatomy, physiology and biochemistry along with understanding how these different disciplines interact with each other when administered in combination during an operation. Not only do they need to be well-versed in drug interactions but also require highly developed abilities for assessing patients’ physical condition before any procedure takes place. As there is no room for error in such a delicate field, an anaesthetist must always be aware that one wrong decision could put the patient’s life at risk. Lastly, due to the nature of their work anaesthetists often experience high levels of fatigue and stress which necessitates good mental health management skills if they are going to stay effective within their profession.
