Pyrosis, also known as heartburn, is a common yet uncomfortable symptom of acid reflux. It occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. People with pyrosis may experience an intense burning sensation in their chest and throat, usually after eating or drinking something acidic or greasy. Other symptoms include feeling of food stuck in the throat and bitter taste in the mouth. While it is not usually a serious condition, it can be quite unpleasant and even prevent you from eating or drinking certain things if it's severe enough. To treat pyrosis, doctors typically suggest lifestyle changes such as avoiding certain foods that trigger symptoms like caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods, elevating your head while sleeping to help reduce reflux symptoms and maintaining a healthy body weight for those who are overweight or obese since extra pounds can put more pressure on your abdomen that increase reflux severity. Taking antacids may help to neutralize stomach acids temporarily but should not replace lifestyle modifications for long-term relief from pyrosis so speak with your doctor if persistent episodes arise for further advice about managing this condition.
